Share (US
stock): A security representing a share in a company, in Germany a stock corporation [AG] or a partnership limited by shares [KGaA] (an equity investment that represents ownership in a company). The issuance of shares is referred to as an issue (Begebung). Shares that are issued together are referred to as a tranche. Shares are initially issued when the company is established and later usually in the course of capital increases. – The special feature of the share is that (unlike other debt instruments) – it does not have to be repaid by the issuer and – it can be traded on the stock exchange. – Shareholders‘ rights are regularly represented by ordinary shares (in stock exchange jargon also „common shares“, US: common stocks: one share of common stock represents a fractional ownership interest in a company). The company may also issue shares in the form of preferred shares (in stock exchange jargon „preferences“; preference share, US: preferred stock) with certain special rights outlined by law. – See stock market, share certificate, issue transaction, initial purchaser, guarantee syndicate, bonus share, maximum price, concert subscriber, blank share, leading share, payment, placement,
