Amalfi (amalfins)
(Gold) coins widely used throughout Europe around 900 from the ancient maritime republic of Amalfi, now a coastal town in Campania (western southern Italy). Amalfi was, along with Venice, the most important port for maritime shipping; the maritime trade courts that still exist in many countries today, as well as the modern compass, trace their origins to Amalfi. – See dareiko, florentine, coin, numismatics, obolus, stater, samarkander, sekel, talent, urukagina rule.
