Church ministry fee; officials salary

geschrieben von am

Formerly the fee for special official acts of a clergyman, also called candle money. – Older term for the salary of a civil servant, also called Bestallungsgeld; bestallen = here: to appoint someone to a (public) position. – See Denkgeld, Kerzengeld, Memoriengeld, Messegeld, Salär, Stolgeld, Taxe.
The term „bailment“ refers to the deposit of money or securities by an official entrusted with the management of an official’s finances: Deposit in money or securities which an official entrusted with the management of the treasury (in older documents also officer instead of official) used to have to pay. The purpose was to cover any damages arising from the performance of official duties. Today, this liability is usually replaced by fidelity insurance. – See guarantee money, liability money.
