Turkish danger levy, also known as Türkenzieler and Türkensteuer

geschrieben von am

A levy for the maintenance of an army for the purpose of warding off the Turks. Since 1453, after the conquest of Byzantium – today’s Istanbul – the Turks had been pushing inexorably northward. In 1683, under the leadership of the Grand Vizier Kara Mustafa Pasha, the Turkish lord surrounded the then imperial capital of Vienna. – At the urgent request of Pope Innocent XI, the Polish king Jan III Sobieski (1629/1674-1696) rushed to the aid of the besieged city. The Polish relief force defeated the Turks in the Battle of Kahlenberg outside Vienna on September 19, 1683. The Turks then retreated south to the Balkans. – See Dänengeld, Defensionergeld, Festungsgeld, Friedensgeld, Heergeld, Hussengeld, Pfennig, Ranzion, Satifikationsgeld, Schatzung, Superindukt.
